Liferay Portal

Liferay Enterprise Portal is a free and open source enterprise portal written in Java and distributed under the GNU Lesser General Public License. It is primarily used to power corporate intranets and extranets, and provides robust enterprise functionality including support for external document management systems, LDAP integration, social tools, and wikis.

Liferay Portal allows users to easily set up robust features common to websites. It comes out of the box with user registration, captcha, document library, lucene-based search, wikis, news feeds, social chat, and more. The Portal system is built on portlets and as such, there are many third-party community-contributed plugins and add-ons. Portlets allow users to add new features or customize Liferay's behavior and appearance. Because of this plug-in extensibility and modular design, Liferay is sometimes described as a content management framework or a web application framework. Liferay's support for plugins extends into multiple programming languages, including support for PHP and Ruby portlets.

Although Liferay offers a sophisticated programming interface for developers, no programming skills are required for basic website installation and administration.
Liferay Portal is Java based and runs on any computing platform capable of running the Java Runtime Environment and an application server. Liferay is available bundled with an application server such as Apache Tomcat.
