Microblogging real identity rules to be imposed on China's Weibo are likely to make the country's most popular microblogging platform more alluring to advertisers, as China based company Sina Corp seeks to start generating revenue from its product later this year. On Friday, Beijing-based users on Weibo will need to be registered with their real identities in order to post online. Other major cities, such as Shanghai and Guangzhou in china country, are expected to adopt similar rules. Analysts said the move was unlikely to cause a steep drop in user engagement and may actually see an up tick in advertiser interest in idea, as the identity rules would weed out spam accounts and give China based company Sina precious user information that could turn the platform into a money-spinning crown jewel. "It's not going to have a major impact on user engagement because there's nothing else that does what this platform does in real time," said Shanghai-based marketing consultant Mrr.T.R. Harrington.

"From an advertising targeting perspective Weibo has the potential to become much more valuable in the market," Harrington said. Weibo, dubbed the Twitter website of China, allows users to post short messages, gather fans and follow other users. It is valued up to $4.5 billion by analysts, compared to Twitter that is valued at $8 billion based on its latest round of financing. Information technology China's online advertising market rose 57 percent to 51.2 billion yuan last year, surpassing traditional newspaper advertising, according to Beijing-based consultancy iResearch. China based company Sina was the fourth-largest advertising platform after Baidu Inc, Google China and Taobao.
The new regulations, which require users to pass personal information to China based company Sina, could empower the firm to target users with advertising and to collect useful data on them, analysts said. China based company Sina on Monday estimated that 60 percent of its 300 million users of Weibo users would have registered their real identities by the deadline. Harrington said he estimates that new rules could see a pent up demand for big brands to advertise on Weibo. "If I could tell all my customers tomorrow that they could buy their brand keywords on Weibo, they will buy them immediately," he said. Chief Executive Charles Chao said in an earnings call last month he expects to start monetising Weibo effectively in the second half of the year through advertising. The real-identity rules would also make it harder for spam accounts to operate. Chao told local media late last year that China based company Sina recently removed tens of millions of spam accounts. When the real-identity rules were announced by the Beijing city government on December 16, China based company Sina shares plunged to its lowest in 15 months on concern that the rules would neuter discussion and engagement on the lively platform.

The China based company Sina said during the earnings call that the rules would have a negative impact on user engagement but analysts said the rules would not affect the platform's popularity in the medium to long term. "I would expect it to trend down just a little bit but probably not dramatically," said Michael Clendenin of RedTech Advisors. China has repeatedly criticised microblogs for spreading what it calls unfounded rumours and blocks social networking sites such as www.Twitter.com website and www. Facebook.com website citing the need to maintain social stability. "The vast majority of users are not publishing sensitive information, they are using it as a documentation of their daily lives," said Sam Flemming, founder of Shanghai-based social media consultancy CIC. "I don't see that this would really impact their use of the platform," Flemming said.

Gonzalo Martinez's overheating gasoline scooter needed better ventilation parts. He designed the parts on his home computer that night and hit "Print" for his office printer. When he went to office the next morning, the two parts -- a turbine fan and the cover housing of the scooter's ventilation turbine -- (printed in ABS plastic) were waiting at his office printing station. He put them into his scooter and had his scooter running, without the hassle of visiting a mechanic. Gonzalo Martinez's behaviour might not appear surprising; he is after all director for strategic research, Office of the CTO at design software behemoth Autodesk. But it hints at the very near future when not just design buffs like him, but anybody will be able to manufacture an unimaginable variety of things on demand. The process called 3D Printing -- originally known as Additive Manufacturing -- is not very different from printing a digital document from your home. Only here, a 3D object is the 'printout'. Instead of ink on paper, layers upon successive layers of materials (like plastics, rubber and titanium) are put together to create the object.

This week, a revolutionary nano racing car, four times the width of a human hair, was created in minutes, thereby hitting a new high in high-precision printing of nano scale structures. On a more humble scale, students can print 3D models of their rocket designs and test these like aerospace engineers would. Scientists can get a more comprehensive understanding when they see how molecules reach out to each other in 3D versus in 2D, consequently exploring and creating in completely new ways. Companies can make not just prototypes, but product parts, quickly and on-demand, thereby saving time and money. German auto giant BMW for instance, saved 58% in costs and 92% in time by manufacturing its jigs and fixtures with Stratasys' -- one of the world's largest manufacturers of 3D printers -- 3D printing technique instead of traditional CNC machining techniques. Highly customised design for each part has even greater implications in aerospace. The US Air Force is building many such 3D printed parts for its UAVs. Arguably the most revolutionary benefits of 3D printing though, will come in medical applications simply because no two person's body parts are identical. So hearing aids can be designed and printed exactly for a certain person's ear canal, consequently improving comfort and effectiveness. Bone implants can be printed to an accuracy hitherto only imagined.

"Within the next five years, we will have the ability to make 3D printed body parts like bone scaffolds," says Jeffrey De Grange, VP Direct Digital Manufacturing at Stratasys. Developing artificial organs is the most talked-about possibility of this emerging technology. Experts like Nima Samidi, a senior analyst at research firm IBIS World, estimate that the bioprinting of organs like livers will take off in the next 10-15 years. Companies like Organovo and Invetech have already built 3D printers to layer human cells and print any type of a desired 3D pattern. When further developed, these tissues could create blood vessels and hopefully, organs! Millions battle life-threatening complications in medical therapies and these solutions could save their lives. Because the parts would be built specifically for that person, the hope is that several complications of regular transplants will be bypassed as well.

Equally revolutionary would be to manufacture parts on demand in zero gravity, in outer space. Silicon Valley-based startup Made in Space has built and tested a 3D printer to do that, aboard the International Space Station (ISS) in 2014. "It's difficult to anticipate what we are going to fix because you don't know what is going to break. But the great thing about 3D printers is that whatever breaks, you can fix it in a day!" says Made in Space CEO Mr.AaronKemmer. He recalls how an ISS experiment box's connectors had broken. New connectors were sent up from Earth and took several months and several millions of dollars in tests just so that the parts could survive the launch. Instead of planning for every possible situation -- which is the current attitude in space missions and is incredibly expensive -- materials could be carried on board and designs of parts needed could be printed as necessary. This would be especially helpful on long missions like going to Mars or asteroids, where things are bound to break all the time.

Of course, all of these developments will radically change manufacturing as we know it. Manufacturers will be able to make complicated and unique items in just the quantity needed reducing waste, lowering costs and increasing flexiblity and efficiency. But 3D printing has to overcome several limitations, the most crucial being the limitations of materials. Today objects can be 3D printed in approximately 70 materials only. At the commercial manufacturers' level, new certifications and quality standards would accordingly need to be established. At the consumer level, as artworks get replicated, copyrights can become serious concerns. IBIS World projects that the 3D printing industry revenue will grow to nearly $3billion by 2016. While aerospace and medical applications will be key drivers experts believe that in spite of all of these revolutionary applications, mass consumer applications will be a big push as well.

"People will be able not just to make things but to manufacture uniqueness. It will open the imagination!" says Gonzalo Martinez. Today consumers are availing of print-to-order communities like Shapeways to print iPod Nano bracelets, tomorrow as materials rise they could print the working iPod itself. "Once people can produce customized products very quickly, it will change the way people look at manufacturing," says Samadi. "Moreover, traditional manufacturing companies too, will eventually develop niche customized products for the masses." Autodesk for instance, has a free consumer design software called 1234D. Consumers can print their designed objects on their home 3D printer or Autodesk connects them to services like TechShop, Ponoko and Shapeways that can. Although relegated primarily to hobbyists and artists right now, experts believe that it's only a matter of three to five years before the prices of 3D printers drop and these become as common inside homes as regular printers. Commercial 3D printers from Stratasys cost between $50,000 and $400,000. But Makerbots' consumer 3D printers cost about $1,200. And printer giant HP has some in the pipeline as well. "Every two weeks a company approaches us saying that they have made a 3D printer and how we can collaborate. The moment some of these companies hit at a consumer level, volumes will expand dramatically and 3D printing will become the next wave of the digital revolution," says Gonzalo Martinez.

Indus Towers chief executive officer MR.B.S.Shantharaju said on Wednesday that the company’s capital expenditure would be at least 40 per cent lower this year, than it was in the last two years. This would be completely funded by internal accruals. “We will be adding more towers, but not like we did three years ago,” he said. “The game is not about increasing the number of towers; the game now is to get more tenants on existing towers.” The company, he added, is not interested in acquiring towers to enhance its portfolio. Indus Towers is a joint venture between the country’s top III telecom operators, Idea Cellular company, Bharti Airtel, and Vodafone telecom. Ever since telecom tower infrastructure sharing was permitted, Indus Towers company expanded fast — and now has 110,000 towers across 16 circles In the country. Indus now expects growth to come from increased infrastructure utilisation and hence more tenancies. “Many areas still have single operators, and there is opportunity,” said MR.B.S.Shantharaju. The company expects its tenancy ratio to go up to 2.25 in the next three years from current 1.95. Their tenancies do not include the extra business Indus Towers company has bagged due to increased opportunities in the form of 3G rollouts by indian telecom operators in the market.

Competition in the telecom tower sector which has been a cause for concern too seems to have stabilized. Indus Towers Company does not expect any more new competition to come into the already fragmented market. “From the entry level in country,” MR.B.S.Shantharaju said, “there is nothing much left where someone else can come. That stage has gone.” The company announced an initiative to reduce the usage of diesel to run towers, by using methods like electric batteries besides solar- and wind-based electricity to power them up. The Indus Towers Company has already made 8,000 sites diesel-free, and plan to take this number to 20,000 in a current year. It will also pass on a part of the saving in operating expenditure to the company clients. “This will make us more competitive,” said chief operating officer - Mr.BimalDayal.

Microsoft Corporation American multinational corporation today released six security updates that patched 7 vulnerabilities, including a critical Windows bug that hackers will certainly try to exploit with a network worm, according to researchers group. "This is a pre-authentication, remote code bug," said Mr.AndrewStorms, director of security operations at nCircle Security, referring to MS12-020, the one critical bulletin today and the update that he, other group researchers and even Microsoft Corporation urged users to patch as soon as possible. "It will allow network execution without any authentication, and has all the ingredients for a class worm," said Mr.AndrewStorms. "I'm particular spooked by this one," said MR.JasonMiller, manager of research and development at VMware. "Hackers want [vulnerabilities] that don't require authentication and are in a part of Windows that's widely used. I guarantee that attackers are going to look at this closely." MS12-020 patches a pair of bugs in Windows' Remote Desktop Protocol, a component that lets users remotely access a PC or server. Remote Desktop Protocol is frequently used by corporate help desks, off-site users and IT administrators to manage servers at company data centers and those the enterprise farms out to cloud-based service providers like Amazon and Microsoft. The critical vulnerability, dubbed CVE-2012-0002, could be exploited by an attacker who simply sends specially-crafted data packets to a system with Remote Desktop Protocol enabled, said Microsoft Corporation. "Absolutely, this will be very attractive to hackers," said Mr.AmolSarwate, manager of Qualys' vulnerability research lab, echoing Storms and Miller. "It doesn't look like it's that complicated to come up with the code sequence [to trigger the bug]."

Microsoft raised all its usual flags, and more, for MS12-020, tagging it with an exploitability index rating of "1," meaning it expects reliable exploits to appear within 30 days, and ranking the update as the one to patch before all others. In a post to the company's Security Research & Defense (SRD) blog, Suha Can and Jonathan Ness, a pair of Microsoft Corporation engineers, went even further. "[We] strongly encourage you to make a special priority of applying this particular update," said Can and Ness. Ideally, customers will quickly apply the patch, but Microsoft Corporation also offered a temporary workaround. The workaround, which Microsoft automated using its Fix-it support tool, adds another layer of security by requiring Network Level Authentication, or NLA, to force authentication before an Remote Desktop Protocol session begins. The Fix-it tool applies to Windows Vista, Windows 7, Server 2008 and Server 2008 R2. Windows XP and Server 2003, however, do not support NLA; for the former, Microsoft's released an additional Fix-it tool that adds NLA support to Windows XP ServicePack III (SP-3) desktops and laptops. Links to the Fix-it tools can be found on the SRD blog. Several researchers applauded Microsoft's workarounds, in large part because unlike the patch, they don't require a system reboot, which may make server administrators skittish about applying MS12-020 itself. "NLA a really good option," said Mr.WolfgangKandek, chief technology officer at Qualys. He and others expect that many Microsoft customers will enable NLA first, then later patch the vulnerability by deploying MS12-020.

"It's going to be enough to mitigate the first wave of attacks," argued Storms, of enabling NLA. Storms and Miller agreed that that first wave will be, as Miller put it, a "scattershot" style attack where hackers use search engines and port sniffing to find as many Remote Desktop Protocol -enabled machines as possible. Later, targeted attacks aimed at administrators' PCs -- which they use to remotely manage their companies' data servers -- or those launched from bots already inside a network, seem likely. Microsoft Corporation downplayed the threat to some degree, saying both in the MS12-020 bulletin and in the SRD blog that Remote Desktop Protocol was not turned on by default in any supported version of Windows. Miller thought that was misleading. "I'm a little concerned that Microsoft is implying that Remote Desktop Protocol is not commonly used," said Miller. "It's used by server administrators and help desks.... It's a really good technology ... and enabled on a lot of corporate networks." Storms pitched in as well. " Remote Desktop Protocol is the way to remotely manage your servers," said Storms. "Let's be honest, it's enabled more often than not, and [switched on] on virtually every server." "It's unfair to say it's not really widely used," added Miller. "I use it to connect to 40 to 50 machines a day in my job." Because of what the experts said was the wide use of Remote Desktop Protocol, they thought Microsoft underplayed the severity of the vulnerability. "They're making a call to action, but without raising too many red flags," said Storms. "They're trying to get across [that this is significant] without saying it's doomsday." Mr.WolfgangKandek wished Microsoft Corporation had a deployment priority higher than "1," the ranking the company assigned MS12-020. "This is more a '1+,'" Mr.WolfgangKandek said.

The biggest unknown is how fast hackers will figure out how to exploit the vulnerability, and thus how quickly Windows users will face attacks. Mr.WolfgangKandek, Miller, Storms and Sarwate couldn't agree on a timeline, but all thought that active exploits would be in circulation quickly. And even if they're not, there have been threats that wreaked havoc weeks or months after a Microsoft patch. "I don't want to compare this to Conficker," said Miller, talking about the worm that infected millions of Microsoft Corporation Windows PCs in late 2008 and early 2009. "But that did its worst 1 month, 2 month after the patch [of the exploited bug]." Miller had a point: Although Conficker first appeared just 11 days after an October 2008 emergency, or "out-of-cycle" update, it only gained traction in January 2009, and peaked with a media frenzy three months after that. Microsoft Corporation also released three other updates for Microsoft Windows, and one each for VisualStudio and Expression Design, but the experts said they were small potatoes compared to MS12-020. "It's all about Remote Desktop Protocol today," said Storms. "Either enable NLA or install the patch ... today." March's six security updates can be downloaded and installed via the Microsoft Corporation Update and Windows Update services, as well as through Windows Server Update Services.

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers application period opened on January 12 this year and applications are now being accepted.
